Stamp Collecting Supplies
![]() |
Actually stamp collectors don’t need any special tools for stamp collecting. Anyone can simply collect stamps and put them in a storage box. Unfortunately, just like anything that isn’t taken care of, the stamps will suffer some damage. Therefore, stamp collectors should invest in a few important tools of the trade. The most important supplies are the ones that help to preserve the stamps, display them, and to inspect them.
Most collectors spend a lot of time and effort in planning how to best display their stamps. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money, you can go the inexpensive route by putting the stamps in glassine envelopes. Then the envelopes should be put in a box that will keep the stamps from humidity, heat, and light. Without these precautions, the stamps will deteriorate.
If you want to display your stamps, you will need an album. There are numerous types of albums to choose from. Many collectors organize their stamps in some manner such as by country, size, or theme. Some of the best types of albums are the ones that have clear plastic pockets for each stamp. You can add your own creative touches to these albums. If you plan to sell or trade your stamps, this type album is the perfect one for you because the stamps are very easy to remove.
Most stamp collectors also buy stamp catalogs so that they can do research on the stamps they have and the ones they would like to purchase. These guides also offer pricing guides. For the beginning collector, the purchase of stamp collecting books is essential.
Many stamp collectors buy a simple magnifying glass. This tool allows the collector to look carefully at the stamps so that imperfections are easy to find. You can also use the glass to find any special markings on the stamps.
If you are a serious collector, you might want to purchase a pair of stamp tongs. These special tongs have rounded tips to keep you from damaging stamps with sharp edges. Certainly you wouldn’t want to touch the stamps with your own hands because the oils from our skin damage the stamps. You might not notice the damage at first, but the oil damage will eventually begin to show.
Stamp collecting tools are pretty easy to find. If you visit a stamp show, vendors will certainly have a wide selection to choose from. You can also buy the tools online. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on the tools, but they are very useful to the collector.
